Who We Are
Learning in Retirement is a non-profit volunteer society of over 350 members in Nelson and the surrounding area. LiR is run by seniors for seniors, providing ways for community to develop, both for long-time residents and for those who have just arrived. We are fortunate that the Continuing Education department of Selkirk College partners with us for some of our activities.
From September through April, LiR offers a Friday morning lecture series and a variety of multi-session courses and single-day classes. These cover a wide range of topics and subjects of interest to seniors – mental and physical health, travel, environment, history, art, dance, music and much more. The Friday presenters and the instructors for the courses are community members who volunteer their time and expertise.
LiR also provides a way for seniors to share common interests, often throughout the whole year, via informal interest groups. These are created and managed entirely by members with LiR serving only to put people in touch with each other.
To enjoy the Friday presentations or the courses, you must first become a member of LiR, while the interest groups are open to the wider community.
Membership costs $25 + tax and runs from September 1 through August 31. Other fees are $5 for a single-session class, $4 per meeting for a multi-session course, and $4 for a Friday presentation. Many Friday presentations are available on Zoom for people who cannot attend in person.
Members receive an email weekly reminding them about the Friday presentation and any courses starting that week, and also providing information about events and opportunities in the Nelson area that might be of interest to members. It is a must-read every Monday!
